CANA was awarded the University Kinesiology Research Centre Construction Management Contract on August 14, 2003.

The Kinesiology Research Centre is the Human Performance Laboratory for the University founded in 1981 by Dr. Benno Nigg. The research topics include mobility and longevity, anatomy, biology, bio-mechanics, motor control, physiology, and psychology — all with the goal of understanding human mobility.

This project added two floors to the existing building giving the University additional lab space for bio-mechanic research, along with additional office space. A major part of the project was the addition of a new third floor over the existing metal deck. This work could only be completed after the new pre-cast envelope and roof were installed.

The scope of work required extensive coordination with the user groups as the building remained in full operation during construction.

CANA initiated a three-stage move-out of user groups during construction to allow construction in occupied areas to proceed without undue disruption to the individuals working there. This process worked very well and CANA was able to turn over each section ahead of schedule. The project was substantially complete two weeks ahead of schedule.

CANA is proud to have built approximately 50% of the University of Calgary campus. The Jack Simpson Gymnasium at the University is named after CANA’s founder.
