A modern addition to a historical building.

St. Mary’s University is located in the south part of Calgary, adjacent to Fish Creek Provincial Park, on the site of the former Father Lacombe home. The campus has several heritage buildings, and accommodates the current community of approximately 700 students, plus faculty and staff.

The St. Mary’s Heritage Centre features a new multi-purpose gallery space attached to the heritage water tower. The building is timber frame construction and the design was inspired by the rest of the campus. It serves several direct purposes including space for academic and extra-curricular activity and also enhances flexibility of existing buildings on campus. The building is used for events, conferences and fundraising, as well as additional lecture space.

The project had a tight schedule. CANA pre-planned and worked with the trade contractors, specifically the timber frame contractor, to mitigate risks associated with long lead items. We coordinated deliveries and installations in a matter that mitigated impact to the user groups as the work was completed in the heart of the active campus.
