Details

Building facilities that meet Alberta's healthcare needs.

The South Addition Project at the Rockyview General Hospital was a complex project that consisted of a new structure horizontally attached to the existing hospital, designed to house a new emergency department, ICU, CCU, lab, and renal departments. The building consists of a three-storey structure with two levels below grade for a total combined area of 200,000 ft². It is a concrete structure with a structural steel enclosure for the mechanical floor.

The building was designed to fit within available space south of the existing Rockyview Hospital. Special considerations were required to be made due to the close proximity of a residential area, the Glenmore Reservoir, and city bike paths. Prior to starting the South expansion, the Helipad had to be relocated from its original location. Several locations were studied before deciding on the final location, which was based on access to the Emergency Department.

The building has five concrete shafts for both elevators and stairs which were poured consecutively with the slabs. Special formwork and construction methods were required when pouring against the existing structure.

The ambulance garage was constructed with grade beams and a slab on grade. The concrete used for this slab on grade contained a colored hardener additive to increase the durability and aesthetics.

This project also features two bridges spanning approximately four meters in length and two meters wide. One bridge is curved and connects the main floor to a remote helicopter pad, which is glycol heated to prevent ice buildup.
