Details

Located in Red Deer, Alberta, this six-level hospital was constructed by CANA in 1981. The facility features 550 beds and 10 operating rooms, plus several other patient services. Two parking levels, built at the base of the hospital, have a capacity of 200 cars. Recreation facilities, support service levels, two levels of nursing wards, and shelled space for future development were completed as part of the project.

Design was very important in this hospital. Each patient room has a view of either the outside environment or a spacious atrium inside the centre of the hospital, allowing for plenty of natural light to enter. Technical details include the use of cast-in-place concrete and pre-cast structural steel members. Interstitial spacing was also incorporated into the design, allowing for ease and flexibility in running various services to different parts of the hospital. This is beneficial in a hospital setting, due to the constantly changing technology and required services in a health-care setting. An emergency power generating station was also constructed.
