In 2012, CANA completed a major renovation to the Olympic Oval roof, replacing over 12,000 individual custom-built porcelain enameled steel panels on the roof. Ten years later, CANA's ReNew team returned to complete another major renovation project that would extend the building's lifecycle once again. The building's old windows—prone to fogging, condensation, and breakage—were upgraded while keeping the Oval operational.
CANA’s Renew division replaced 24 window bays (each with 32 individual panes) with double-glazed insulated glass units with low-emissivity coatings ("low-e") and argon-filled spacers. This work was completed while the facilitity remained open and operational. Over the summer, our team managed construction while kids' camps took place in and adjacent to the facility.
In addition to managing public safety, a strong logistics plan was needed to ensure there was no disruption to the interior climate of the rink, which would have a negative impact on the condition of the ice. Work was phased and completed sequentially at each of the 24 window bays that circumvent the building.
One unique part of this project was our team's strategy to accessing the work zones. We collaborated with the scaffold supplier to develop a hybrid scaffolding system that made use of the building's existing precast ledge, incorporating it into the working platform surface. This reduced the footprint of the scaffolding system and minimized the impact of construction on existing landscaped areas.
We are best known for our unique and one-of-a-kind projects, but these projects are just some of many institutional, commercial, industrial, residential and infrastructure work that we complete.
