The iconic home for the National Music Centre.

CANA proudly delivered the state-of-the-art Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. The Studio Bell is an example of world class architecture and construction and has a variety of uses from education, to recording studios, to live entertainment, and gallery areas.

Studio Bell is comprised of nine vessels or interlocking sections including performance spaces, broadcasting suites and offices. The facility has two towers that are connected by a plus 60 thoroughfare. The building is steel and con- crete and is clad in Terra Cotta tile that was manufactured in Germany and hand-glazed in Amsterdam. There were over 200,000 tiles installed on the interior and exterior of the building.

The building is targeting LEED Silver certification. Systems include passive heat reduction, variable volume air systems, extensive daylighting and direct energy systems to help meet the LEED guidelines and reduce the building’s environmental footprint. The construction team also achieved an 81% waste diversion rate.

Studio Bell’s unique structural design required modeling technology to ensure the correct installation of these features to a very precise tolerance. The complexity of the design necessitated state-of-the-art surveying systems and close coordination in the field.

Through the years, a myriad of projects have been added to the CANA resume, but the ones that come to mind most significantly are the Calgary Courthouse, which is probably the most modern and sophisticated of its type, and the magnificent National Music Centre, which will most certainly prove to be a jewel in the crown.
