Although there is still some minor deficiency work and an outdoor spray park to be completed in the spring, the GH Dawe Community Centre expansion is complete. The facility re-opened to the public on Sunday, March 19.
The project began in the spring of 2021 and was a massive undertaking for the team. The main feature of the job included a brand new rink expansion with a four-lane running track circling above it that also has fitness and administrative space.
Other work included renovations to the existing rink and the main entrance/reception, upgrades to the existing fitness centre, and landscape/flatwork upgrades including a new exterior plaza and parking lot.
The scope included universal change rooms, barrier-free lounge areas, multi-purpose spaces/studios, and offices for sports coordinators and administration. Careful phasing allowed the majority of the facility to remain open to the public with minimal impact to users.
The original design of the building called for a composite structure made up of mainly steel, but to meet the City of Red Deer's budgetary needs, we suggested a precast option and were able to save the City a significant amount of money.
