Kahanoff Centre and Decidedly Jazz Danceworks

Kahanoff Centre 2 is a 12-storey, 100,000 ft² building that features six stories for the anchor tenant, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (DJD) and an additional 65,000 ft² of space for offices of non-profit organizations. The building is LEED Silver Certified and building performance and indoor environment were key factors.

The first six-stories feature performance space, a community living room, media room, library, offices and event areas including a multi-storey lobby and a floating concrete feature staircase on the main floor. This facilitates DJD’s services, which are focused on performance creation and dance education.

The upper six floors are home to non-profit organizations including Calgary Counselling Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association of Calgary, Centre for Suicide Prevention, Kids Upfront Canada, Youth Central and EmpoWering Minds.

CANA fit-out the office levels and also renovated several floors of the connecting Kahanoff Centre 1 offices.

To overcome working on such a tight site, CANA secured our site accommodation on an adjacent property and rented land to the east. We also tied in to the existing 10-storey Kahanoff Tower for seismic connections, while the building remained operational and followed strict protocols to limit disruption.

CANA worked with the design team early on to address value analysis opportunities, constructability and costing during an extensive pre-construction phase. CANA utilized Building Information Modeling for the costing, in order to confirm concrete take-offs and reduce waste.
