The company started in 1942 when Calgary businessmen Red Dutton, Reg Jennings, and Bob Burns founded Burns & Dutton Concrete and Construction Company Ltd., a subsidiary of Standard Gravel and Surfacing of Canada Ltd.
In 1949, Burns and Dutton hired a chief engineer: Jack Simpson. Deemed a "brilliant young engineer" by Time Magazine, Jack improved the company's operations significantly through a new approach to concrete: pouring more than one mile of sidewalk a day in Calgary.
By the 1960s, Jack was president of the company. Today, the company is still led by the Simpson family.
